The Storm on the Sea of Galilee – Stories by Sea of Galilee boat Captain Judah

Here is my story about the storms on the Sea of Galilee: After working on the Sea of Galilee boats as a captain for 40 + years I have seen many unpredictable storms.

Looking at the topographic map of the Sea of Galilee you can see at the eastern side the Golan Heights high mountains, at the north side there are small hills, the southern side is very flat and in the west side there is mount Arbel and small mountain of Tiberias.

During the winter season the wind comes from the east side – from Syria and it blows throughout the canyon mountains to the Sea of Galilee, It brings very hot strong wind and then it causes big waves and a big storm on the Sea of Galilee, the wind blows to the west and the north and because of the strong winds the fishermen are unable to fish.

During the rainy season at the winter the wind comes from the south with heavy rains. No one can predict when the storm will start and it can surprise the Galilee fishermen with very strong wind. When the sudden winds surprise the fishermen they have to go and dock quickly to save their fishing boats. During the summer time the wind changes direction because of the temperature of the water and the ground, usually the wind arrives from the west and the north side. It is strong wind but not as strong as the eastern wind.

The Sea of Galilee can be a calm sea, and turn quickly to a very stormy and unpredictable sea.

Jesus Calms the Storm (Mark 4:35-41)

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
